Importance of recycling for environmental protection

Nowadays, the impact of climate change is becoming more pronounced and although the individual is not a major polluter per se, large groups of people are. That is why it is necessary to adopt and apply new achievements in the field of environmental protection and spread environmental awareness whenever we have the opportunity to do so.

When we talk about preserving the environment, the concept of recycling is one of the first associations. But to understand the importance of recycling for the preservation of the environment, we should first clarify what this term encompasses.

What is recycling?

Recycling is a process that includes the collection and processing of materials that would otherwise end up in a landfill, all with the goal of making it a new product. Although this sounds simple in theory, in practice we often encounter a number of aggravating circumstances, and even resistance to the recycling process.

That should not be the case, because it represents an important element of the future of our planet, and the benefits it brings are multiple. We have tried to list some of the most important ones.

Recycling reduces the consumption of natural resources

Non-renewable natural resources are being consumed at an incredible rate. That is why it is necessary for each country to devise its own strategy that will deal with this important issue. Take for example the uncontrolled deforestation and the time it takes for a tree to grow and it will soon become clear to us the extent of the ecological imbalance that is ubiquitous.

That is why this is the right moment when we should strive to make our impact on nature as positive as possible and to approach recycling whenever possible. In this way, we best save hard-to-renew resources such as water, oil and wood. If, for example, we increase the total recycling of plastics, we will directly affect the smaller production of this material, for the production of which resources such as fossil fuels and hydrocarbons are primarily used.

Recycling protects flora and fauna

Bearing in mind that the forest is a natural habitat for a large number of plant and animal species, and that it is cut down and destroyed uncontrollably (which also negatively affects the amount of ozone in the atmosphere), many species lose their natural habitat and even become endangered.

Therefore, it is crucial that paper, cardboard and other products made of wood are recycled as much as possible, in order to reduce the harmful impact that forest destruction has on flora and fauna.

Recycling protects water and the aquatic world

Unfortunately, it is generally known that a large amount of waste ends up in the seas, rivers and oceans, which pollutes the water and directly endangers the natural habitats of the river and sea, as well as flora and fauna. When water is polluted, it easily reaches the soil, from the soil to the plants, and from the plants it reaches us.

Here, recycling could play a key role because the amount of plastic produced would be significantly reduced, which would bring great benefits to aquatic life and significantly reduce overall pollution.

Recycling means less incinerated waste

In the past, the waste management industry promoted incineration as a legitimate way to reduce the total amount of waste. However, it was later learned that this has a bad impact on the environment and that recycling offers a better alternative.

If we know that air pollution in our country and surrounding countries is already worryingly high, and if recycling can directly affect the reduction of landfill incineration, we should always opt for that option.

Recycling saves energy

All packaging that does not go for recycling is incinerated, which directly contributes to higher CO2 emissions into our atmosphere. That is why it is crucial that packaging waste is always disposed of in special containers provided for that purpose. Namely, when we make products from recycled material, incomparably less energy is consumed than when we make completely new products.

Recycling helps reduce harmful CO2 emissions

Because recycling uses much less energy than the standard production process, much less CO2 is emitted, the gas responsible for causing the greenhouse effect. This effect is most responsible for global warming, followed by water and air pollution. In that sense, recycling could at least slow down climate change.

Recycling means less garbage in landfills

With the continuous increase in the number of inhabitants on our planet, the amount of waste we produce also increases. Thus, various items end up in landfills that could be recycled and reused, which in turn would reduce the amount of waste at the landfills themselves.

Recycling encourages the use of more environmentally friendly alternatives

Nowadays, large companies are increasingly turning to recycling, the use of energy from renewable sources as well as the preservation of the environment in general. Moreover, environmentally conscious companies use this as part of their branding strategy, and thus gain a greater number of loyal customers who value their business vision.

We at Zaštita Beograd are well aware of the legal framework that covers recycling in Serbia. In addition, we offer a wide range of services related to smart waste management, as well as the analysis of water, soil and air samples that we perform in our modern and accredited laboratory.
